Swine Flu and You

The recent outbreak of swine flu, what with over 5,000 cases reported in the U.S., is a cause for concern in many expectant moms. We’ve outlined the symptoms below, as well as preventive measures for protecting you and your baby.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), the symptoms of swine flu are not all that different from regular seasonal influenza. The symptoms include fatigue, runny nose, achy muscles, fever, coughing, and lack of appetite. There have been reported symptoms of nausea and vomiting as well.

Kegel Exercise

The Kegel exercise is important to do during pregnancy to ensure an easier labor, and reduce the risk of painful tearing during delivery. Some recommend 100 Kegels a day, others say six, 5-second squeezes, about five times a day.

To start, you want to isolate the pelvic muscle, to make sure you are exercising the right muscle. The best way to isolate the muscle is stop your urine flow. You should not practice the Kegel exercise this way, as it can cause a urinary tract infection. Once you located the muscle, you can do the exercise two ways:
1. Flutter exercise – squeeze, release, squeeze and release, as quick as possible, as many times as you can.
2. Squeeze and hold the muscle for about 10 seconds, release for 5 seconds, and repeat.

Exercising during pregnancy provides many benefits, such as making it easier to lose the baby weight after childbirth, allowing you to sleep better, staying fit, and giving you more energy. Certain pelvic exercises, such as the “Kegel” can shorten the second stage of labor, allowing for an easier and a less painful labor.

Safe to sleep on my stomach during pregnancy?

Many expectant moms worry about this during pregnancy. Will I squash my baby? Will I cut off the blood supply? Well, now we have some good news. Your uterus is cushioned behind your pubic bone early in the pregnancy, which provides complete protection. Later on, you probably will be too uncomfortable to sleep on your stomach.
