Most women find out if they’re carrying twins by performing a routine ultrasound at 12 weeks. However, your doctor may be able to hear two separate heartbeats as early as 6 weeks! Many women carrying twins gain more weight than usual during the first trimester, but that can also happen by overeating, so it’s not sure-proof.
The most common myth of carrying twins is that your stomach is bigger with twins. Realistically however, some women carry large with single babies too, and a large stomach is not a sign of twins. Some women can have pretty small stomachs when carrying twins.
There are some signs that may indicate you’re carrying twins, however, the only way to know for sure is by hearing two heartbeats:
1. History of twins in the family
2. Significant weight gain during your first trimester
Any kind of reproductive treatment will increase your odds of a multiple pregnancy, as well as older age. Women above 35 have a higher chance of conceiving twins than a younger woman. Fraternal (non-identical) twins on the mom’s side runs in the family, and some say that it skips a generation, although there has not been substantial evidence proving that. Twins are fun, but so are single babies – either way, enjoy the wonders and days before your baby(ies) arrival!
