This week marks the end of your fourth month and the beginning of your fifth. You’re almost halfway there! Most people “pop” right about now. You should get some maternity clothes now instead of waiting until you don’t fit into anything. See our article on how to buy maternity clothes, and check out our tips at week 13.
Some women begin experiencing minor fluttering right about now. After you drink orange juice or eat chocolate, you should be able to feel very slight movement.
At week 16, your baby weighs just under 3 ounces and measures close to 5 inches long. The eyes and ears are moving in position and she will start growing hair. Under normal circumstances you should not be experiencing nausea anymore. The next month or two are the best months of pregnancy! You’re small enough to look cute and not feel drained, and you’re no longer nauseous. Enjoy these next few months!
You may want to start thinking about maternity leave. If your boss doesn’t know you’re pregnant, you should tell him now. It’s important to give him enough time to have a positive feeling about it. Legally, you’re entitled to six weeks paid leave (eight for cesarean), which usually amounts to 60% of your salary. You’ll have to fill out forms with your doctor and boss and have them provide information. If you are unable to return to work after six weeks, you may be eligible for unpaid sick leave. You won’t get paid for it but your boss will be required to hold the job for you. For all the details and more information, you can visit the U.S. Department of Labor site.
In response to the question, “Can I visit the dentist during pregnancy?” – Sonika M. from Arkansas
Definitely. In fact, it’s recommended. Many women find they have terrible teeth during pregnancy. You should go for cleanings and checkups regularly. You should not take x-rays but you should take care of your teeth so there are no issues after your pregnancy.
