At 27 weeks, your baby already weighs 2 pounds! She can now open and close her eyes and is sleeping at regular intervals. Your baby’s immune system is getting ready for real life outside the womb. She may have discovered how to suck her thumb, which is not terrible because it helps strengthen her cheek and jaw. Your baby’s skin is wrinkled from being in water for so long. It will remain like this until a few weeks after birth.
Your baby’s lungs and immune system continue to develop. If you were to give birth today your baby would have an 85% chance of surviving with a lot of medical help.
The second trimester is almost over!! As it comes to a close you may notice some new symptoms. Many women have pain in the lower back along with leg cramps every so often. The expanding uterus puts more and more pressure on the veins. As pregnancy progresses unfortunately these cramps may get worse. When you feel these cramps try stretching the calf muscle. Walking on it for a few minutes may help too.
In response to the question, “Is it safe to be standing on my feet all day while I’m pregnant? ” – Mellisa K. from Mississippi
Although it may be tiring, being on your feet all day is not a problem. In general walking on your feet is good for you. It keeps you in shape and reduces the risks of forming blood clots. Standing in one position may cause problems. It tends to lower your blood pressure and can possibly lead to fainting. Try taking short walks every so often.
